Planning a BrM Deployment
Agencies planning a BrM installation should make the following decisions before installing BrM 7.1:
- Which database? The choices are either Oracle or SQL Server. Typically, most agencies rely on one or the other.
- Are you migrating from an existing 6.x database or starting from scratch and need a new database?
- Are you using multimedia? If so, make sure the new site will have access to the multimedia location.
Database Type
For agencies with standards for database software, this issue is simple: just use the database software specified by your agency. If an agency is already using BrM, then the database can be backed up and upgraded to a BrM 7.1 database.
As a standard precautionary measure, agencies are strongly encouraged to backup any existing BrM database and upgrade the new copy rather than just upgrading the production database in place.
Enterprise installations should use the full versions of Oracle or SQL Server. These databases are robust enough to handle the needs of many users simultaneously and do not have the limitations of the lightweight Express versions which are primarily intended for personal or development purposes. Because BrM is a database driven application, it is worth spending some time getting to know the different database options available to BrM users. Choosing a database is very important and will have a dramatic effect on BrM's performance and scalability.
